MANAMA, Bahrain — A U.S. Navy sailor assigned to the USS Farragut died Saturday after falling from a hotel balcony while on liberty during a port visit here, U.S. 5th Fleet officials said.
The sailor was pronounced dead at the scene. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is cooperating with Bahrain authorities in investigating the death, the Navy said in a statement.
Officials said the sailor's identity would be released 24 hours after notification of the family, in keeping with Defense Department policy.
The USS Farragut is part of the USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group, which is currently deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. The ship is in Bahrain on a routine port visit.
