Iraq vet explains why he exposed Marines' use of Nazi SS flag
Waitman Beorn, a West Point graduate and history professor who served in Iraq from 2003 to 2004, stirred up a hornet's nest when he alerted the Marine Corps inspector general that a scout sniper platoon in Afghanistan was using the Nazi SS flag as its standard.
Beorn has done extensive research on Nazis and the Holocaust, and seeks to teach "ethical decision-making in a military context using the Holocaust as a vehicle," he told Mother Jones magazine.
In an exclusive interview with the magazine, Beorn discussed the reasons he blew the whistle on the platoon, what he thinks of the military's response and what actions should be taken against the Marines.
