Marine fined for jumping roof to roof on Okinawa
CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — A Marine private who was arrested last month after jumping across rooftops in Okinawa was released from Japanese custody Friday after paying a fine, according to the Naha public prosecutor’s office.
Marine Pvt. Nicholas J. Kelly, 22, was fined 100,000 yen (about $1,069) after prosecutors filed a summary charge of trespassing against him last week, a spokesman for the office said.
Kelly had been held at the Naha detention center since he was arrested on the afternoon of Feb. 18. He had entered a private backyard near Camp Foster, jumped along roofs in a residential neighborhood and tried to elude police, Japanese authorities said.
Police took a urine sample from Kelly, but the results were not available Monday, a police spokesman said. An officer on the scene said Kelly smelled of alcohol, but Japanese authorities said they would not investigate whether he was intoxicated.
