DOD identifies Marine from Texas killed in Afghanistan

SAN ANTONIO — A Marine from New Braunfels, Texas, was killed in combat in Afghanistan on Wednesday, the Department of Defense announced Thursday.
Sgt. Thomas Spitzer, 23, had been conducting combat operations supporting Operation Enduring Freedom, according to the announcement.
Spitzer's Facebook was flooded with thoughts and prayers from friends after the news was released.
The Department of Defense said Spitzer enlisted in the Marine Corps on August 17, 2009.
Spitzer was a mortarman assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, in Twentynine Palms, California. He died while on his second deployment to the region.
Spitzer's personal and service awards include the Marine Corps good conduct medal, combat action ribbon, Navy meritorious unit commendation, national defense service medal, Afghanistan campaign medal, global war on terrorism service medal, sea service deployment ribbon and the NATO medal-ISAF Afghanistan, according to the statement.
