Germany-based soldier killed in Afghanistan

BAMBERG, Germany — A 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team soldier was killed in Afghanistan on Wednesday, according to the Defense Department.

Spc. Matthew R. Hennigan, 20, of Las Vegas, died at Forward Operating Base Shank of wounds suffered during a small-arms attack earlier in the Tangi Valley, the DOD release states.

Hennigan was assigned to the brigade’s Special Troops Battalion based in Bamberg, Germany. A memorial service has not yet been scheduled.

Hennigan is the fourth 173rd soldier to die in Afghanistan since the unit deployed late last year.
