Spanish police detain 18 ETA supporters
MADRID - Spanish police on Monday detained 18 members of an organization linked to the Basque separatist group ETA, Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz said.
The members of the group, known as Herrira, were arrested in the Basque region and neighboring Navarre. They had helped imprisoned ETA members to maintain contacts with the group, the minister said.
ETA renounced violence in October 2011 following a four-decade campaign of bombings and shootings that claimed about 850 lives.
But the government has refused to negotiate with the group. ETA has rejected government calls on it to hand over its weapons and to dissolve.
