STUTTGART, Germany — U.S. Army Lt. Gen. William Garrett III assumed responsibility as European Command’s deputy commander Thursday in Stuttgart, where he will oversee day-to-day operations.
Garrett, who replaces Vice Adm. Charles Martoglio, reports directly to EUCOM chief Gen. Philip Breedlove. Breedlove resides in Mons, Belgium, because he also serves as NATO’s supreme allied commander in Europe.
Garrett previously served as deputy commander and chief of staff at U.S. Army Forces Command at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He also is a former commander of U.S. Army Africa and held command positions in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Martoglio, who is slated to retire, served at EUCOM since 2010, first as chief of staff and later as deputy commander.
