STUTTGART, Germany — An anonymous caller reported a breach in the fence line of Panzer Kaserne in Böblingen on Halloween after noticing a cut in the fence, according to U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart officials.
“It appears that the fence was damaged intentionally,” base officials said in an e-mail to Stars and Stripes. “The fence was damaged on Halloween Night. You might draw the conclusion that it was a random act of hooliganism. But until we’ve fully investigated the facts, we won’t talk conclusions or details.”
Military police quickly responded to the scene and a maintenance crew repaired the fence while the MPs stood by, garrison officials said. “The MPs conducted their normal patrols throughout the night to ensure the entire perimeter was safe," officials stated. "The fence was permanently repaired the following morning.”
A similar incident happened on Patch Barracks in 2005 when three protestors cut through the fence and walked unchallenged onto base. On Aug. 9, the 60th anniversary of atomic bombing of Nagasaki, they hung an anti-war banner from trees on base before walking out of a gate and turning themselves in to German police.
Neither garrison officials nor Böblingen police would comment further on the ongoing investigation.
