DODDS students must get second dose of chicken pox vaccine

Students headed this fall to Defense Department schools will be required to get the second dose of a vaccine to prevent chicken pox, school officials said.

A memo early this year from the Department of Defense Education Activity said all incoming students must receive the second Varicella vaccine, according to Maggie Menzies, a spokesperson for Department of Defense Dependents Schools−Europe.

If a child has had the chicken pox, he or she does not need the Varicella booster.

Near the end of the school year, parents will receive a notice if their child needs the second vaccine and the school nurse must be given a copy of the student’s updated shot records.
