A U.S. soldier was seriously hurt in a one-car accident on a rural German road on Monday while driving toward Grafenwoehr, police said.

The 33-year-old driver was traveling on district road NEW 21 about 7:40 a.m., coming from Mantel, when he lost control of his car. The BMW skidded to the right side of the street, then skidded to the left. The car hit an embankment, stood up on its front end and rammed into a tree.

Firefighters had to extricate the man from his car. The man was not wearing his seat belt, the Eschenbach police said in a statement.

The soldier was airlifted by a helicopter to the hospital.

Twenty-seven emergency workers where on the scene of the accident, police said. The street was closed for two hours.
