DOD identifies another Sky Soldier killed
Shortly after mourners in Vicenza, Italy, concluded a ceremony Thursday remembering Sgt. Kyle B. Osborn, the Department of Defense announced the death of another Sky Soldier.
Sgt. 1st Class Daniel T. Metcalfe, a 29-year-old from Liverpool, N.Y., was killed Sept. 29 in Sayyid Abad, Afghanistan, according to a DOD press release. He was fatally injured when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire.
Metcalfe was a member of the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment based in Vicenza. He is the 12th member of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team to die since the brigade deployed to Afghanistan this summer and the third member of “The Rock” to fall in combat.
A memorial ceremony has not been announced, but it will likely be held in early November in keeping with the brigade’s policy of holding such events once each month.
