National Coast Guard Museum plans due to be announced

NEW LONDON, Conn. — The mayor announced Thursday there will be an announcement April 5 on the downtown location of the National Coast Guard Museum.

A model of what the museum could look like and a booklet that will explain potential exhibits will be available at the formal announcement at the Science & Technology Magnet School, Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio said.

The city has received preliminary agreements and endorsements from abutting property owners and other stakeholders, as well as nods from state and federal officials for cooperation in bringing the museum to New London, he said.

Although the mayor refused Thursday to say the exact location of the proposed museum, last month U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney, D-2nd District, said he has seen drawings for a roughly 50,000-square-foot museum on property adjacent to the train station in downtown.

The city owns a less than half -acre parcel of land with about 200 feet of waterfront between City Pier Plaza and Cross Sound Ferry.
