Soldiers killed in collision identified

Fort Bragg officials have identified the two soldiers who were killed Thursday night in a collision about two miles from post.

Spc. Amber Bostian, 26, of Monticello, Ark., and Pfc. Michael Hickey, 25, of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., were killed when their car slammed into another vehicle on Yadkin Road at Cimarron Drive.

"Losses like these are heartbreaking," said Col. Robert D. Morschauser, commander of the 18th Fires Brigade. "The 18th Fires Brigade would like to express our deepest condolences to family and friends of our fallen troopers."

Bostian, a mother of three, enlisted in February 2011 as a water treatment specialist. She attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, S.C., followed by Advanced Individual Training at Fort Lee, Va., before reporting to A Company, 188th Brigade Support Battalion in September 2011.

Hickey enlisted in August 2010 as a petroleum heavy equipment operator. He attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, S.C., followed by Advanced Individual Training at Fort Lee, Va., before reporting to A Company, 188th Brigade Support Battalion in March 2011.

Bostian and Hickey were both recipients of the National Defense Service medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Global War on Terror medal.

Hickey is survived by his mother, Kethalen Hickey of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., and Bostian is survived by her three children.

The crash is under investigation, according to a statement from Fort Bragg.

The two soldiers were in a 2004 Pontiac GTO traveling north toward Fort Bragg about 9:35 p.m., Fayetteville police said. The driver lost control of the car, crossed the center line and hit a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta traveling toward the All American Freeway.

The passenger in the Pontiac was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and died there from injuries, police said.

Two people in the Jetta were also taken to Cape Fear Valley for treatment. Their names have not been released.
