Fort Bragg officer charged with DWI, assaulting 3 cops
An Army officer newly assigned to Fort Bragg is accused of assaulting three Fayetteville police officers as he was trying to leave a Bragg Boulevard nightclub on Saturday.
Lt. Col. Alfonso T. Plummer, 41, was charged Wednesday with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a government official and one count each of driving while impaired and possessing an open container of alcohol in the passenger area of a vehicle, according to arrest warrants.
Plummer, who lives on the 300 block of Brownstone Drive in Raeford, had arrived at Fort Bragg four days earlier, court documents show.
He was leaving Sharky's Cabaret at 944 Bragg Blvd. when an off-duty officer working security saw Plummer's sport utility vehicle hit another vehicle while pulling out of the parking space, said Lt. Chris Davis, a Fayetteville police spokesman.
Two off-duty officers approached the car, Davis said, and noticed that Plummer's eyes were glassy and bloodshot. The officers reported a strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle, Davis said.
Plummer was asked to turn the engine off, but instead, he put it into drive and started to pull away, Davis said. One of the officers reached in the window, trying to keep the vehicle from hitting two other officers.
"As he (the officer) attempted to get control of the vehicle, he saw it most likely was heading for a huge crowd," Davis said.
As the officer was trying to stop the car, Plummer began struggling with him, Davis said. The two were still struggling when the car hit the back of a small truck.
Plummer was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for unspecified injuries, Davis said.
Plummer's blood-alcohol level was not known since it was being determined with a blood sample, Davis said.
Plummer's bail was set at $50,000.
