Afghan kids killed in crossfire after Taliban attack US soldiers

Taliban insurgents attacked American soldiers during a community meeting Monday in southern Afghanistan and three children were killed in the crossfire, according to The New York Times.

The soldiers were meeting with tribal leaders in the Shajoe District of Zabul Province regarding the formation of a local police unit when the attack happened.

The deputy governor of Zabul, Muhammad Jan Rasoolyaar, said many children had gathered around the U.S. soldiers when the attack took place and it was too early to know which side was at fault.

A spokesman for the U.S. military accused the Taliban of deliberately targeting the children.

No American soldiers were hurt in the attack but three others were wounded in the crossfire.
