CHRISTMAS ILLUMINATION AT KOSAKA (Akita prefecture): Dec. 20 & 24, 5-7:30 p.m.;  Kosa town is known as the birthplace of Christmas in Japan – in 1873, German engineers invited local residents to celebrate Christmas with their silvermine co-workers in 1873. SHIROYONE SENMAIDA ILLUMINATION (Ishikawa prefecture): Through March 15, for four hours after sunset, Shiroyone’s Senmaida are Japan’s historic rice paddy terraces and one of the most scenic places in Ishikawa prefecture; enjoy 21,000 LEDs lit by solar energy on footpaths between rice paddy terraces.
