ASAKUSA SANJA MATSURI FESTIVAL (Tokyo): May 18-20; Sanja Matsuri was one of three great festivals in Edo -- the former name of Tokyo — and features about 100 mikoshi, portable shrines in which Shinto gods are symbolically placed into and paraded on the streets to bring good fortune to the local businesses and residents and smaller neighborhood mikoshi can be seen on the streets of Asakusa and three large mikoshi belonging to Asakusa Shrine will be delivered Sunday; Subway Asakusa Line, or Ginza Line, Asakusa Station on Asakusa and Ginza lines; 03-3844-1575; www.asakusajinja.jp/english/.

73RD SHIMODA BLACK SHIP FESTIVAL (Shizuoka prefecture): May 18-20; Shimoda Black Ship Festival commemorates the visit of U.S. Navy’s Commodore Matthew C. Perry to Shimoda in 1854 and the signing of the Kanagawa Treaty (U.S.-Japan Friendship Treaty), which opened Japanese ports including Shimoda to the Western world. U.S. Navy (Army) and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force have participated in the festival every year.
