Contractor loses personal information on 4.9 million Tricare patients

A Pentagon contractor has lost data on about 4.9 million Tricare patients who were treated at military facilities at San Antonio from 1992 through this month, the San Antonio Express-News reported on Thursday.

The company, Science Applications International Corp., has misplaced backup computer tapes with personal information on patients living in Tricare's southern region, the newspaper reported. That information includes Social Security numbers, addresses and diagnoses.

Tricare says no credit card or bank information was on the lost tapes, according to the newspaper.
