Event brings veterans together through community service
WASHINGTON -- Organizers at George Washington University are bringing back the Veterans Day of Service, to be held this year on April 13.
The event, a project of school’s Veteran Service Initiative, is designed to help veterans network with each other and the local community through a series of service projects.
The concept isn’t new -- veterans service organizations have done neighborhood outreach work for years -- but the service-plus-socialization approach has proved particularly appealing to younger veterans trying to adjust to civilian life. Groups like Team Rubicon and Team Red White & Blue have seen membership spike in recent years with similar models.
The GW event, co-sponsored by Student Veterans of America and including participants from several other DC-area universities, will include projects with military charities like Operation Homefront and the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors as well as neighborhood clean ups throughout the city.
All volunteers are welcome. More information is available at the event website.
