Elmo headed back into combat

Down at the Pentagon today some top military leaders and young military children got a sneak preview of the Sesame Workshop's latest special, Coming home: Military familes cope with change.

It's the latest in a series of programs created by the Sesame Street crew to help military families talk to their young children about a parent's deployment and the challenges of military service. And the Workshop just recently completed a tour of military bases touching on the same themes.

Families I've talked to about the specials have raved about how much it can help really young kids deal with really adult issues. Elmo sends letters to his father while he serves as a medic overseas. Rosita learns her father still loves her after he returns from deployment in a wheelchair. The latest special goes even further, covering topics like brain injuries and prosthetic limbs.

The full new episode won't be available until April 1 stateside, and a few weeks later on AFN overseas. But stop by the Sesame Workshop's web site to if you want a preview -- You can also watch full versions of the earlier shows there and find out how to get a free DVD of the specials through your local base.
