Reliever Fisher delivers old-school note with throwback gear
Published: July 4, 2010
One might conjure up visions of the late PGA great Payne Stewart upon first glance at First Round/Last Round relief pitcher Brent Fisher, what with the short-cut knicker trousers and Columbia-blue ivy cap.
"Throwback to the sanctity and purity of the game," Fisher said, adding that his get-up, one of a kind in the 15th Firecracker Shootout Interservice Softball Tournament, was inspired by Honus Wagner, the Pittsburgh Pirates great who played from 1897-1917 in the "dead ball" era.
A self-described historian of baseball, Fisher says he "likes the way he (Wagner) played" along with other greats from Major League Baseball's ham-and-egg days. "He was a first edition, a forerunner of Pete Rose. The whole time he was in Pittsburgh, he (Wagner) was the guy."
Fisher says he had the knickers made "six or seven months ago. I was looking for a cap to match it and I finally found it in Korea" at the Pacificwide Open Tournament in late May.
Fisher, 39, hails from Atlanta and passionately cheers for the National League East-leading Braves. He's a retired Marine Corps gunnery sergeant who now works for Marine Corps Community Services' Single Marine Program.
