Rare appearance by Atsugi sailors at All-Navy men’s softball camp

It's very rare that sailors get selected for the All-Navy softball tryout camp from Naval Air Facility Atsugi in Japan. Not every selection of a Pacific servicemember makes its way to my desk, but I can say it’s the first time I’ve heard of it happening.

Atsugi’s Flyers shared the title in Sunday’s Kanto Kup at Yokota with Misawa without two of their players, both infielders. Shortstop-third baseman Scott Vurleigh, a petty officer second class, and second baseman Paul Beck, a petty officer third class, each got berths in the All-Navy camp ongoing now through Sept. 13 at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Fla.

If selected, they’ll join an All-Navy team that has not won the All-Armed Forces tournament since 1996 at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Navy’s finished third three of the last four years.
