Rain delay mars 10th Mike Petty track meet

For the first time in the 10-year history of the event, rain delayed action Friday in the Alva W. "Mike" Petty Memorial Track and Field meet at Kubasaki High School's Mike Petty Stadium.

Heavy rainshowers, forecast for the next two days on Okinawa, forced meet officials to scrap qualifying heats in the short-sprint events. Action was called off at 1:15 p.m. Meet officials said they'd try again at 5 p.m. to complete the remaining field events and sprint qualifying. If the weather continues to be poor, officials said they'd try to do everything on Saturday.

A handful of events did finish. Kubasaki's Erin Bugler won the girls discus while Justin Clemenson took the boys shot put. Faith's Sonya Hagberg won the girls long jump and Grant Robinson of Morrison Academy repeated his high-jump gold. In the only running event completed, Allie Reichenberg of Kubasaki rallied to win the 3,200.

Meet officials voided the boys 3,200 results after a mixup in the lap count and a premature ring of the last-lap bell on Lap 7 caused some boys to pull up one lap early while others continued running. After a brief discussion, officials decided to consider running the 3,200 again after all other running finals are done Saturday.
