Lightning, rain delay Firecracker softball tournament

July 4th came early, if a glance at the sky was any indication at the Gunners Fitness & Sports Complex softball fields early Thursday evening.

An enormous thunderstorm, which appeared to cover the entire island of Okinawa on tenki.jp colour radar, forced postponement of the first day of play in the 2010 Firecracker Shootout, a Pacific-wide open softball tournament for interservice teams.

Five men's and four women's games on Thursday's slate were pushed back to 6 p.m. Friday, and a new schedule was due out sometime Friday from Foster Athletics, which is hosting the event.

Postponed games included: Men, Daegu/Area IV of Korea vs. Okinawa's Club Red, Camp Casey of South Korea vs. Okinawa's Paddy Mac's Pub, Misawa Air Base A of Japan vs. Okinawa's Raw Dawgs, Okinawa Sea Bees vs. Kadena Air Base of Okinawa, and Public Enemy vs. 1st Round-Last Round of Okinawa. Women, Misawa vs. defending women's champion Yard Busters of Okinawa, Yokota vs. Okinawa Typhoons, Daegu/Area IV vs. Paddy Mac's and Camp Casey vs. Camp Humphreys of South Korea.

Defending men's champion American Legion of Okinawa recorded the only victory of the tournament without having even stepped on the field, taking a forfeit victory over Yokota Air Base, Japan, which didn't have enough players at the scheduled start of play, 6 p.m.
