Legion pounds Casey for Firecracker men's repeat

It took almost the entire weekend for American Legion to find its batting stroke, but it did at the most appropriate time -- the men's championship game in the 15th Firecracker Shootout Interservice Softball Tournament.

Unsung Brian Tiner went 3-for-3 and drove in four runs, while Chris Wine also had four RBIs on 2-for-3 hitting and Chadd Malin hit the game's only home run as Legion crushed Camp Casey of South Korea 20-0 Monday at Foster Field 1.

That gives Legion 13 Pacific Grand Slam tournament titles, second-most in history to defunct Pacific Force, which won 39.

Almost as if taking a cue from the Camp Casey women, who pounded Camp Humphreys 23-3 also in three innings earlier Monday, Legion sent 17 men to the plate and scored 13 runs in the second inning to take the wind out of the Warriors' sails; they managed but two hits in three innings.

As for Casey's women, that's three Pacific Grand Slam tournament titles, but the first won outside of Korea. Kadena Air Base's defunct varsity team leads the women's standings with 20 Grand Slam tournament titles.
