Kanto wrestling tourney canceled

Weekend snowfall and school closures and delays have forced meet organizers to cancel Monday's Kanto Plain Association of Secondary Schools championship wrestling tournament, officials said Sunday.

Yokota's schools are closed Monday and other high schools in the Tokyo-Kanto area are on two-hour delay, according to DODEA Japan's Facebook page. In the face of that and since the Far East meet starts three days later at Yokota, meet officials decided to cancel the Kanto finals altogether.

They had been scheduled for Saturday, but were postponed until Monday ahead of the worst blizzard to hit the Tokyo area in 20 years. Five inches were recorded in the Yokosuka area, eight in central Tokyo and as much as 20 fell at Yokota Air Base.
