10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31: All parameters remain the same, except Kadena Air Base 18th Wing Weather Flight forecasts now call for sustained 86-mph winds and gusts up to 120 mph between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Onset of damaging 58-mph winds projected for 1 p.m., lasting until 4 a.m. Wednesday. Next update after noon. Still time -- though not much -- to grab that stray basketball on the balcony and bring it inside before the winds really begin to howl.

Dave Ornauer has been with Stars and Stripes since March 5, 1981. One of his first assignments as a beat reporter in the old Japan News Bureau was “typhoon chaser,” a task which he resumed virtually full time since 2004, the year after his job, as a sports writer-photographer, moved to Okinawa and Ornauer with it.
