Typhoon 04W (Mawar), # 2: TCCOR 3 issued for Okinawa

10 p.m. Saturday, June 2, Japan time: Mawar, the fourth numbered storm of the Northwest Pacific’s Tropical Cyclone season, was upgraded to typhoon status at 6 p.m. Japan time Saturday. Okinawa entered tropical cyclone condition of readiness 3 at 10 p.m. Saturday.

Officials at Kadena’s 18th Wing Weather Flight forecasting peak gusts of 36 mph along with showers associated with Mawar’s outer bands as it rumbles 143 miles southeast of Okinawa at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Keep an eye on AFN-TV, AFN Okinawa’s Facebook page, Kadena Air Base’s Facebook page and listen and read any and all command updates to ensure you get the first word regarding Mawar.

As always when it comes to these, no matter how far or near you are, always err on the side of safety. Initiate a general cleanup around office and home. Tie down or store loose objects such as bicycles and hibachis. Visit the commissary and get those necessities in your closet.

And as always, keep it here at PST for the latest.

About the Author

Dave Ornauer has been with Stars and Stripes since March 5, 1981. One of his first assignments as a beat reporter in the old Japan News Bureau was “typhoon chaser,” a task which he resumed virtually full time since 2004, the year after his job, as a sports writer-photographer, moved to Okinawa and Ornauer with it.

As a typhoon reporter, Ornauer pores over Web sites managed by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center as well as U.S. government, military and local weather outlets for timely, topical information. Pacific Storm Tracker is designed to take the technical lingo published on those sites and simplify it for the average Stripes reader.
