DODDS in Dubuque

With the graduation of another class of athletes from DOODS-Europe high schools, it might be fun to list some of the former Europe-based athletes who elected to attend Dubuque University in Iowa, where some 80 DOODS-Europe and Far East grads matriculate each year.

University of Dubuque associate admissions director Bob Broshous provided the following list of DOODS graduates who have performed significantly for recent Spartan athletic teams:

  • Eddy Fazaldin, Wuerzburg class of 2002 and UD class of 2006, played soccer for four years.
  • Katie Feterl, Baumholder class of 2003 and UD class of 2007, played volleyball and basketball for four years.
  • Rashard Flemming, Wuerzburg class of 2002 and UD class of 2006, played soccer for four years.
  • Bethany Fountain, Wiesbaden class of 2005 and UD class of 2009, played soccer for four years.
  • Tyler Junker, Mannheim class of 2003 and UD class of 2007, played soccer for four years.
  • Jillian Nieves, Heidelberg class of 2002 and UD class of 2006, played soccer for four years.
  • Billy Porter, Wuerzburg class of 2001 and UD class of 2005, played soccer and tennis at UD all four years. Earned masters in Communications and coach the men's and women's tennis teams at UD from 2006-2008.
  • Brennon Relaford, Ramstein class of 2005 and UD class of 2009, transferred to UD from Shippensburg in 2007 and played football for two years.
  • Brandon Stevens, Wiesbaden class of 2003 and UD class of 2007, played football for four years.
  • Edmond Woods, Wiesbaden class of 2004 and UD class of 2008, played football for three years.

Gregory Broome is an experienced and accomplished community sports journalist. Officially a native of Iowa, Broome grew up a Department of Defense dependent at sites all over the United States and Germany.


He finally settled in Florida, earning a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Central Florida.

Broome began his journalism career in in 2004 as a sports writer for the Ocala Star-Banner in Ocala, Fla., covering high school, college and community sports and earning recognition for his work from the Florida Press Club. In 2009 Broome was named the first sports information director at College of Central Florida, an NJCAA member school, where he launched the program's website and social media pages and revamped its promotional and game-day operations.

Broome joined Stars and Stripes in October of 2012.
