Bison leave their hoof prints on D-I hoops titles

It’s been just over eight months since Mannheim High School shuttered its doors forever, but that didn’t stop former Bison stars Sam Rosario and Emma Roberts from leaving some traces of Mannheim on the just-concluded European Division I basketball tournaments.

Rosario, a senior guard, and Roberts, a junior forward, each was voted to the Division I all-tournament team Saturday night after the Lions and Lady Lions defeated their counterparts from Ramstein in the three-day tourney’s championship games.

Rosario, who scored seven points and controlled the game on the floor in Heidelberg’s 55-43 title-clinching victory over the Royals, was joined on the all-tourney squad by teammates Marcel Simon, the MVP, and Simon’s twin brother, Maurice.

Roberts, along with teammate Rebecca Luna, the MVP, was selected after the Lady Lions’ 32-31 victory over the Lady Royals. Roberts scored 10 points in the title game as Heidelberg became the first school since Rota in 2005 to post the gender sweep.

The exploits of Rosario and Roberts, however, weren’t the only echoes from Mannheim in this year’s Europeans. New school Schweinfurt wore gold Mannheim home uniforms emblazoned with the word "BISON" in all caps in a boys' pool-play game against SHAPE. The Luck of the Bison prevailed there, too. Schweinfurt won 53-49.
