Tokyo, April, 1966: Moe Howard of the Three Stooges talks with Stars and Stripes reporter Hal Drake at the Imperial Hotel. Howard, on a vacation trip around the world with his wife, was 68 years old and still performing his finger-poking, face-slapping act, but hinted that retirement was looming. "The public can't see old people cracking each other," he said. "They'll wind up feeling sorry for us. We work hard to be funny. We want people to laugh at us, not pity us."

Frankfurt, Germany, May 17, 1949: Among the travelers arriving at the Rhein-Main airport is Chico Marx, best known for his movie escapades with brothers Groucho, Harpo and Zeppo. The piano-playing comedian was starting a five-day tour in which he and a group of English entertainers performed at military bases in West Germany and Berlin. As one would expect from one of the Marx Brothers, he wrote in the Rhein-Main VIP register that his rank was "vertical," that he came from "any place where there's a dame" and that his destination was "hell."

Behind him is a street sign on which someone has placed a poster of fugitive Serbian wartime leader Radovan Karadzic that has a story of its own. A person involved in a lovers' triangle reportedly spotted the other two at a sidewalk cafe while driving past, and tossed a anti-personnel grenade. A fragment, blatantly ignoring the "don't touch him" command, struck directly in the middle of Karadzic's forehead. No one was injured in the incident.

Munich, Germany, December, 1965: Robert Goulet on the set of "Blue Light," a World War II spy drama TV series being filmed in Munich. In the series — which ran for 17 episodes on ABC in 1966 — singer Goulet played David March, an American correspondent who penetrates the Nazi high command in the guise of a traitor. Four episodes of the show were later put together and released as a movie, "I Deal in Danger."

Leimen, Germany, July, 1985: Seventeen-year-old tennis star Boris Becker listens to the cheers of the crowd that greeted him on his return to his hometown after he won his first Wimbledon title by defeating Kevin Curren of the U.S. in the finals. He was the youngest player, the first unseeded player and the first German to win Wimbledon. Over the next six years, Becker would add two Wimbledon championships and finish second three times.
