Christmas tree behind the Berlin Wall, 1961

Berlin, December, 1961: Forlorn and incongruous behind the barricades and barbed wire of the four-month-old Berlin Wall stands a Christmas tree, a symbol of peace and goodwill on earth. (To the Communists in the city's Eastern sector, it was known as a New Year's tree.)
