Berlin, November 12, 1989: Seated next to the recently-opened Berlin Wall at Checkpoint Charlie, cellist Mstislav Rostropovich plays pieces by Bach in honor of East Berliners who died trying to escape to the West. Rostropovich was exiled from the Soviet Union in 1974, and went on to lead the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C.
