From the S&S archives: General officers at home on the range

SEOUL — More than 50 general officers of the Eighth U.S. Army and the Republic of Korea Army met at the Korean Military Academy firing range here to compete in the Commanding General's Invitational Marksmanship Match.

Commanders and staff generals of each of the major commands in the ROK entered a five-man team in the five-match event

General Hamilton H. Howze, commander-in-chief, United Nations Command, was host for the morning-long activity.

After carbine, rifle and pistol competition, a novelty pistol shoot was held. Shooters tried to hit swinging targets ranging in size from a large dinner plate to an egg.

Following the firing, members of the U.S. I Corps (Group) demonstrated three new infantry weapons.

Live fire demonstrations of the claymore anti-personnel mine and M-79 grenade launcher were conducted and other weapons displayed.

Division commanders from ROK Army units fired the grenade launcher with many scoring direct hits on the first attempt.

Plaques were awarded to the first through fourth place winners with engraved cigaret lighters awarded members of the winning teams.
