BERLIN, May 31 (S&S) — Gov. Thomas E. Dewey, of New York, declared here today that Russia has not fooled the Western world regarding its ultimate aims in lifting the Berlin blockade.

"I was very much interested," Dewey said. "in what the reaction would be when Russia stopped playing bear and started playing lamb.

"No one was deceived.

"Of course, we all still hope," he added, "that the lifting of the blockade will prove to be genuine."

Dewey praised the air lift as "one of the great achievements of the century, commanding the unlimited admiration of the entire world." He said the people of the U.S. are extremely proud of the men who made the air lift possible. and will stand behind its continuance as long as the air lift is necessary.

"I was also greatly impressed," the GOP 1948 Presidential candidate said, "with the competence of the Military Government officials with whom I talked this morning.

"American personnel here are rendering a far greater service to the country and to the cause of stability than is generally appreciated."

Dewey met Mayor Ernst Reuter and other officials of the West Berlin city government. Of them and the people they represent, Dewey declared:

"They are brave people who have made a fine contribution toward a free Germany — a Germany we hope will also be united."

(Dewey and Mrs. Dewey made Frankfurt an overnight stop on their European tour today, arriving at Rhine-Main airport from Berlin at 5 pm and going at once to Victory Guest House for the night.

(The Deweys were met at the airport by Brig Gen Philip E. Gallagher, Frankfurt Military Post commander, the FMP honor guard, and the 7788th Army Band, which greeted the New York governor with "Sidewalks of New York.")
