Dr. Albert Schweitzer receives the German book publishers' peace prize from West German President Theodor Heuss in Frankfurt on Sept. 16, 1951.

FRANKFURT, Sept. 18 — German Federal President Theodor Heuss today awarded the peace prize of the German book publishers to Dr. Albert Schweitzer in a ceremony at the historic Paulskirche.

In the scroll presented to the great French theologian and philosopher, the German book publishers expressed gratitude and esteem to Schweitzer as a pioneer for a peaceful world and for support to the poor and sick. The 10,000 marks connected with the peace prize was given by Schweitzer, who is 75, to support German refugees.

The ceremony in the church was attended by Heuss, his wife, Deputy French High Commissioner Armand Berard, Hesse State Ministers Ludwig Metzger and Fritz Troger, Frankfurt Lord Mayor Walter Kolb and Mayor Walter Leiske.

Schweitzer, in accepting the prize, said he was optimistic for peace. He has been in Europe for several weeks. He lives at Lambaréné, French Congo, where he runs a leper colony.
