Bonn officials greet Ethiopia's Emperor Haile Selassie

BONN, Nov. 8  — Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia arrived here today to pay the first visit by a head of state to the German Federal Republic.

The emperor, surrounded by a smartly dressed retinue, was resplendent in colorful uniform as he stepped from a special train this afternoon to be greeted by high German officials and thousands of applauding Germans.

On hand to greet the emperor, who wore a dark uniform with gold sashes and braid and a white-plumed hat, were President Theodor Heuss, Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and members of the German cabinet.

Red carpets were spread out from the steps of the train along the Bonn platform and down an exit under a canopy to the sidewalk, where the emperor climbed into an auto for a drive across the Rhine to the Petersberg Hof hotel.

During his visit to this area, the emperor will stay at the hotel, one of West Germany's most luxurious, where the first and second floors have been reserved for his party.

Hundreds of policemen held the huge crowd in check outside the rail station, which was bedecked with the black, red and gold flags of the German republic and the red, gold and green emblems of Ethiopia.

The long entourage of official cars sped away from the station preceded by 15 motorcycle policemen dressed in white helmets and jackets — drivers whom the German press has nicknamed "white mice."

Tomorrow the emperor will receive an honorary degree from Bonn University, and in the evening Heuss will give a reception after a performance of "The Marriage of Figaro."

The emperor also is slated to receive the three Allied High Commissioners tomorrow as well as the chiefs of the various foreign missions. Wednesday he will visit points of interest in this area.

Thursday the emperor will visit the Ruhr Valley, and on Saturday he is scheduled to go to Hamburg. Sunday morning he is slated to leave for Sweden.
