RABAT, Morocco Vice President Richard M. Nixon was cheered by an estimated 200,000 Moroccans when he arrived here Friday on the first leg of a good-will tour of Africa.
Nixon showed his appreciation for the reception by twice getting out of the convertible which was taking him from Sale Rabat Airport to mingle with the crowds of Arabs and Berbers lining the route into the city.
Mounted Berber tribesmen fired their rifles into the air as Nixon passed, adding an informal touch to the official cannon salute which greeted Nixon and his wife.
Crown Prince Moulay Hassan led the Moroccan dignitaries who welcomed the Vice President. In a brief speech at the airport, Nixon noted that the U.S. has maintained friendly relations with Morocco "since the birth of our republic."
Nixon first was introduced to Sultan Mohammed V, Morocco's ruler, and then lunched with Foreign Minister Ahmed Balafrej.
Mrs. Nixon spent much of the afternoon touring hospitals and orphanages.
Saturday, the first anniversary of Moroccan independence, the Nixons will drive to Casablanca. They will have lunch with Casablanca officials and visit the U.S. air base at Nouasseur before leaving by plane for Accra for the main visit of his tour.
