Pacific briefs: Flu shots available for operational forces

CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — The influenza vaccination is now available for active-duty operational forces and healthcare personnel at U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa on Camp Lester and Marine base clinics.

The bulk of the hospital’s flu vaccination supply is expected to arrive in late October and should be available to everyone at the hospital’s immunization clinic, the Camp Kinser Family Medicine Clinic and Bush Family Medicine Clinic on Camp Courtney in November, according to a release.

Town hall meeting to be held at Kubasaki

CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — A town hall meeting for residents of Camps Foster, Lester and Plaza Housing Area will be held Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Kubasaki High School auditorium.

Representatives from the Army Air Force Exchange System, Marine Corps Community Services, Family Housing, Provost Marshal’s Office and other organizations will speak, according to a release.

DODDS will host workshop for parents

KADENA AIR BASE, Okinawa — The Department of Defense Dependent’s Schools Okinawa district is sponsoring literacy and math skill improvement workshops for parents Oct. 1.

Parents will receive tips on how to improve their children’s reading, writing and math skills, according to a release.

Information on the elementary school foreign language program and educational and developmental intervention Services will also be provided.

The program will run from 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. at Kadena Elementary School. Childcare will be available for children ages 3 to 9. For details call Killin Elementary School literacy facilitator Jason Scherden at 645-7881.

Online tutoring service available for students

Marine Corps Community Services has linked up with an online tutoring service that will provide homework help for students, a release said.

Tutor.com connects students with tutors who provide homework help and studying tips on any subject. The service is available at MCCS libraries or by visiting www.usmc-mccs.org/library/tutor/

Students who access the site from a home computer should first contact their Marine base library for a password and login information, the release said.

Passport assistance available at Yokosuka

A U.S. Embassy officer in Tokyo will be at Yokosuka Naval Base on Friday to help people apply for and renew passports. The officer will be at the base’s Chapel of Hope from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

2nd ID GI sentenced in assault

A 2nd Infantry Division soldier was found guilty and sentenced to six months in jail for aggravated assault at a Sept. 12 Camp Casey court-martial, division officials said Monday.

Pvt. Angela Houston, of the 302nd Brigade Support Battalion, Company D, was also reduced in rank to E-1 and will forfeit $898 per month for six months.

Division public affairs and judge-advocate staff, queried by Stars and Stripes since Sept. 12, were unable to provide additional details as of Monday.
