on stages around South Korea

Members of the U.S. Army’s 2001 Soldier Show have arrived in South Korea for performances at camps around the country.

The 22-member troupe was delayed by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.

The first performance was to be held at Yongsan Garrison’s Collier Fieldhouse on Thursday, Kathy Surges, an 8th Army morale, welfare and recreation spokeswoman, said.

Other peformances are scheduled for: 7 p.m. Saturday at Camp Casey’s Hanson Fieldhouse; 2 and 7 p.m. Sunday at Casey’s Hanson Fieldhouse; 7 p.m. Tuesday at Camp Stanley’s gym; 7 p.m. Oct. 4 at Camp Page’s gym; 7 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Camp Howze gym; 7 p.m. Oct. 8 at Camp Walker’s gym; and 7 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Camp Humphreys gym.

Produced by the Army’s Community and Family Support Center’s Entertainment Division at Fort Belvoir, Va., the 80-minute, Broadway-style musical includes dance numbers and songs ranging from country to R&B, rap, oldies, soul and patriotic.

The original show was conceived and directed in 1918 by Army Sgt. Irving Berlin, one of America’s most renowned composers.

The 16 performers were picked during auditions at Fort Belvoir in April. They rehearsed there for six weeks before going on the road.

By the time the tour ends in November, the show will have appeared at 53 Army camps in 22 states, the District of Columbia, South Korea and Guam.

The troupe is to leave for Guam Oct. 15.
