Japanese company unveils
metal-free Frequent Flyer bra

A Japanese company is lending its support to women in the war against terrorism: a bra guaranteed not to set off airport metal detectors.

Triumph International Ltd. came up with the idea after a newspaper story reported a woman’s bra set off an airport metal detector in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks, company spokeswoman Hiromi Shinta said.

Triumph designers said they will market the metal-free brassiere after figuring out how to make them. The bras will be made without tiny metallic bra fasteners company officials said cause havoc amid tightened security measures at airports.

The new bra incorporates resinous wires and nonmagnetic metal hooks that do not trigger metal detectors, the company claims.

Female flight attendants and frequent travelers are assured comfortable, safe flights without embarrassment, they added.

“Because Frequent Flyers bras are more costly than regular ones, Triumph will sell” only 500 bras as a trial, Shinta said. “Depending on consumer reaction, we could manufacture more, but [that] is not planned at this moment.”

While the bra targets frequent fliers, Triumph is not planning an advertising campaign as it does for other items in its line.

“We released just a regular press release, and posted it on our Web page,” Shinta said.

The Japanese unit of Germany’s Triumph group will sell the bras on the Internet beginning Dec. 6.

Available in blue, white or orange, it will retail for $31.66 (3,800 yen) and will be sold in a set with panties.
