Taco Bell, Pizza Hut to set up shop
in Iwakuni by early 2002

IWAKUNI MARINE CORPS AIR STATION, Japan — Anchovies and guacamole.

Taco Bell and Pizza Hut restaurants are set to open at the base’s Crossroads Mall food court by early 2002.

Only minor details need to be smoothed out in the contract with Tri-com Corp., the restaurants’ international arm, said Dale Smith, director of Iwakuni’s Marine Corps Community Services department.

“Everything is looking good, and everything is on track,” Smith said Tuesday. “We are now working with our facilities department here and are beginning to purchase the necessary equipment.”

Smith said the Iwakuni community has wanted a Taco Bell for quite some time.

“People have clamored for a Taco Bell for a least a couple of years, and I’m thoroughly convinced it will be a big success here,” he said.

Two eateries currently operating in the food court, Papa Joe’s Pizza and Pepe’s, a Mexican food restaurant, will close to make way for the new eateries, Smith explained.

“The Taco Bell with be a full-service version, and the Pizza Hut will be an express version carrying most of the popular Pizza Hut items,” Smith said.
