Services to be held Thursday for
soldiers killed in Germany crash

SCHWEINFURT, Germany — Memorial services are scheduled Thursday for two 1st Infantry Division soldiers who died in a head-on collision Sunday night, along with a German companion.

Four soldiers and two German women were in a rented Mercedes-Benz when it collided with a semi-trailer truck on a two-lane highway south of Schweinfurt shortly before 10:30 p.m. on Veterans Day, said Capt. Scott Gibson, a 1st ID spokesman.

The soldiers all were members of Battery B, 1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery unit, Gibson said. The two men killed were Spc. Richard J. Nedeau, 22, of Milwaukee, Wisc., and Sgt. Juan Romero III, 24, of Bakersfield, Calif.

One of the injured men is Spc. Christopher Streeter, whose age and home town have not been released. The identity of the other injured man also is being withheld until his family can be notified, Gibson said. No information was available about the two German civilians.

Gibson said the military police report didn’t indicate how the crash happened, though they and local German police are investigating jointly. He said there’s no indication that alcohol was a factor.

The memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday at Ledward Chapel in Schweinfurt.
