Cast members from the Stable Theatre production of “Oliver” perform at the reopening ceremony of the Community Activity Center in Bamberg, Germany.

BAMBERG, Germany — After $60,000 of renovations, Warner Barracks’ former recreation center reopened Friday as the Community Activity Center.

The center is designed as a one-stop entertainment and leisure facility with more appealing decor than the old recreation center, according to Brad Cline, the center’s director.

"The recreation center was a homely, poorly taken care of place," Cline said during Friday’s reopening ceremony. The remodeled facility consolidates the recreation center, outdoor recreation, arts and crafts and the tax relief office all into one location. It also has a new coffee shop,

"We wanted to make it better for our customers and more cosmetically pleasant," Cline said. "Now people won’t have to worry about going to different locations for arts and crafts or to book a tour. It’s all here, and we’ve extended the hours."

The extended hours were the result of feedback from a customer survey last year, he said.

And those opening hours might get even longer, according to Lt. Col. Timothy Hill, 279th Base Support Battalion commander.

"If this really takes off, if the [services] continue to do well and there’s a need for it, the hours will be extended again," Hill said. "Right now, I think these hours are what we need."

Customers who had seen the recreation center before the renovations were impressed with the changes.

"It’s a 180-degree turnaround from the way it looked before," Sgt. 1st Class Carter Criger, who works for the 279th BSB. "Appearance is everything, and I think the way it looks now will really bring the single soldiers in."

Bamberg residents can expect to see more changes at the center in the future, Hill said.

"What we’ve done here is made a very comfortable atmosphere where we hope people will want to come just to relax," Hill said. "But we’ll continue to improve [the center]."

The new operating hours for the center are as follows:

  • Recreation center and outdoor recreation, noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday;
  • Crafts store, noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday;
  • Tax Relief Office, noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, noon to 3 p.m. Saturdays.
