South Korean civic groups form
coalition to oppose U.S. war on terror

South Korean civic groups announced Thursday they formed a coalition to oppose the U.S. war on terrorism, and that they will join international anti-war groups to protest the attacks.

Coalition leaders could not be contacted for comment.

South Korean press reports stated that Green Korea United and the People’s Solidarity for Participatory Democracy are two of the nearly 500 groups in the coalition.

Both groups have protested the U.S. military presence in South Korea. Those protests generally have been peaceful.

A Green Korea United member, who asked to not be named, said the coalition will hold a rally in downtown Seoul on Saturday to collect donations for Afghan refugees.

He said the group issued a statement Thursday claiming that "several thousand" Afghan civilians have been killed in the attacks, "and 6 million more are in danger of being killed."

Television reports in Seoul on Thursday quoted Taliban officials as saying more than 1,000 Afghan civilians have been killed.

U.S. officials say only terrorist and Taliban forces have been targeted, but admit some civilians may have been killed in the attacks. They have expressed regret for those deaths.

The Green Korea United member said Thursday’s statement denounced the attacks, expressed strong opposition to Japanese Self-Defense Forces participating in the anti-terrorism effort, and demanded that the South Korean government not support the U.S. effort in Afghanistan.

South Korea has offered military logistics support and has provided military aircraft to carry humanitarian aid to Pakistan for Afghan refugees.

Bae Gi-chul contributed to this report.
