USAREUR temporarily blocks access to dot-mil sites to beef up security
Special to Stars and Stripes
HEIDELBERG, Germany People surfing the World Wide Web from
commercial Internet service connections can expect to find a couple of locked
doors when it comes to accessing U.S. Army Europe Web sites with dot-mil Internet
addresses.
U.S. Army Europe has temporarily blocked access to its dot-mil Web
sites for all Internet connections except other dot-mil connections, according to a
USAREUR announcement released Tuesday.
The block, implemented May 11, prevents users with commercial
Internet connections from entering official USAREUR Web sites.
E-mail addresses within USAREUR are not affected by the block, and
USAREUR Internet users can still access commercial Web sites, the release said.
The 5th Signal Command initiated the block to prevent computer
hackers from exploiting recently identified computer vulnerabilities. The release did not
say what these vulnerabilities are. Meanwhile, USAREUR agencies are upgrading the
commands computers with the latest protective measures, the release said.
The 5th Signal Command will lift the block against commercial
Internet service providers when all USAREUR agencies have completed upgrades and checks of
their computer systems, according to the release.
Some exceptions apply, however. For example, servicemembers and
family members are still able to access RESUMIX, the site for applicants for civilian jobs
in USAREUR, at www.chrma.hqusareur.army.mil/staffing/resumix
To access other USAREUR official sites, people will have to use
computers with cot-mil Internet connections, such as those at libraries or Army Community
Service offices in Europe, the release said.
