RHEIN-MAIN, Germany - Rhein-Main Airbase will change military command for what
could be the last time before the gates close permanently in four years.
Air Force Col. Christine D. Prewitt will become the 21st commander of Rhein-Main Air
Base during a ceremony at the base on Monday, taking control from Col. Stephen P. Nelson.
Nelson, who has commanded the 469th Air Base Group since July 1999, will head to Scott
Air Force Base in Illinois, where Prewitt was stationed prior to this move. Nelson will
serve as director of operations at the Tanker Airlift Control Center.
While at Scott, Prewitt served as chief of Resources and Strategic Business Planning.
Rhein-Main Air Base is at the southwestern edge of Frankfurt and is home to the 469th
and its 30 tenant units and organizations. More than 2,700 airmen, soldiers, civilians and
family members currently work on the base.
Despite being home to some of the most significant American events in Europe, including
the Berlin Airlift, the base will close and be handed back to Germany by Dec. 31, 2005.
German authorities have said they will use it is part of their Frankfurt International
Airport expansion program.
