Kim chides S. Korean officials who
kept playing golf during military alert

South Korean President Kim Dae-jung on Tuesday reprimanded three defense officials who continued their golf game earlier this month after being told North Korean cargo ships were illegally crossing South Korean waters.

Presidential spokesman Park Joon-young said Kim issued the oral reprimands to Defense Minister Kim Dong-shin, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Cho Young-kil and Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Chang Jung-kil. The admonishment came when Defense Minister Kim visited the presidential mansion to report on his trip last week to the United States, Park said.

The spokesman said Kim told the officials their action was inappropriate. He also noted the officials’ actions while the South Korean military was on high alert had enraged the public.

Last week, the opposition Grand National party called for Defense Minister Kim and Cho to resign over the incident.

Bae Gi-chul contributed to this report.
