CAMP ZAMA, Japan — Col. Sammy G. Wiglesworth was relieved of command of the 17th Area Support Group on Wednesday morning.

U.S. Army Japan spokesman Lt. Col. Steven Boylan would not specify the allegations against Wiglesworth, but said Army regulations allow for a commander to be relieved of duty if it’s determined he cannot command “due to misconduct, poor judgment, … inability to complete assigned duties or for other reasons.”

A 25-year Army veteran, Wiglesworth has been reassigned to U.S. Army Japan headquarters at Camp Zama “to perform duties as assigned until an investigation is completed,” Boylan said.

Maj. Gen. Alan D. Johnson, commander of U.S. Army Japan and 9th Theater Support Command, ordered that Wiglesworth be relieved of his command.

Soldiers are being informed of the decision through their unit commanders, Boylan said.

He added, “This will not interfere with any services to the community.”

Wiglesworth was 17th Area Support Group commander since 1999. His tour would have ended next summer.

Lt. Col. Anthony Foster, deputy commander of the 17th Area Support Group, will serve as acting commander until Wiglesworth’s replacement, Col. Richard E. Talley, arrives. Talley, previously selected for command of the 17th Area Support Group, will assume command this summer upon his arrival from Washington, D.C.
