New Eagle Scout William Ellis Swingle of Rhein-Main Air Base, Germany stands near the goal on the soccer field he developed as his Eagle project.

RHEIN-MAIN, Germany — A Rhein-Main Boy Scout soared to new heights this weekend when he pinned on Eagle during a special Eagle Scout Court of Honor on Rhein-Main Air Base on Sunday.

William Ellis Swingle earned Eagle for his efforts in establishing a soccer field for his community.

He first noticed in June 1999 that there was no place in Gateway Gardens for children to play soccer.

Swingle took charge and marked off a soccer field on an area of land designated for eventual use as a parking lot. The previous base commander agreed to donate some of the equipment for the project. Swingle provided the rest, according to base officials.

School officials later decided not to turn the field area into a parking lot, according to base officials. Instead, the current school parking lot was extended in another direction. The field now is used regularly by neighborhood youth and students of Halvorsen-Tunner Elementary/Middle School for soccer.

This is the first Eagle Scout presentation to a youth at Rhein-Main since the big troop drawdowns of 1995, according to Air Force officials at the base.

The son of Army Maj. Thomas Swingle, from Defense Threat Reduction Agency at Rhein-Main, the 16-year-old joined the Scouts in 1990 as a Tiger Cub. Besides Scouts, Swingle also participates in the chapel senior youth group, American Red Cross and the Youth Activities Center.
